OL2000: Outlook Icon Does Not Work After Upgrade (217612)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q217612

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Outlook 2000, you may notice that your previous Outlook icons on the Start menu, Quick Launch Bar, and desktop do not work.

CAUSE

This problem is most likely to occur with user-customized shortcuts. An example is a shortcut that you dragged to the Quick Launch Bar. When you upgrade Office and install the new version to a different location, the Quick Launch Bar shortcut no longer works, because it points to the old program location.

Office Setup does not update the desktop, Quick Launch Bar, and Start menu shortcuts to programs that are removed during the upgrade. While the existing shortcut might be valid if you install to the same location as the previous version, the shortcut is not refreshed. If you install Office to a new location and upgrade (remove older versions), the existing shortcuts no longer have a valid path and do not work.

RESOLUTION

You can click to activate the old shortcut, and when prompted, browse to the new program location.
