Existing Zone Information Overwritten When Backup DNS Zone Created (217086)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server
This article was previously published under Q217086 SYMPTOMS
When you create a second Active Directory Integrated Domain Name System (DNS) zone server, the new server may overwrite existing zone data.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a new domain controller is created, DNS is installed immediately, and a zone for an existing zone is created as an Active Directory Integrated zone. In this case, replication does not get a chance to propagate the data to the new domain controller. As a result, the new domain controller assumes it needs to create a new copy.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, wait for the replication cycle to complete before manually creating the DNS zone. The zone information is automatically pulled from the original DNS server. If the zone already exists, Directory Service Replication brings the zone information back to its proper state after a period of time.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
