This article describes the case hierarchy that the spelling checker follows when it checks words in uppercase and lowercase letters.

  • If you add a word in uppercase letters (all capitals) to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker flags the lowercase and title case (first letter capitalized) forms of the word. To have the spelling checker ignore these forms of the word, you must add the forms of that word to the custom dictionary.
  • If you add a word in title case letters to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker ignores the uppercase form of the word and flags the lowercase form.
  • If you add a word in lowercase letters to the custom dictionary, the spelling checker ignores both the uppercase and title case forms of the word.
NOTE: If you selected the Ignore words in UPPERCASE check box on the Spelling & Grammar tab in the Options dialog box (Tools menu), the spelling checker ignores (does not flag) all uppercase words. This option is selected by default.
