Publish to PWS 4.0 Does Not Rename Default Document (214523)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows
  • Microsoft Personal Web Server 4.0 for NT Workstation version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you publish content to a FrontPage extended Web running on Personal Web Server 4.0, the default document is not renamed, as it is on Internet Information Server (IIS) or another Web server. For example, on IIS, the default document is Index.htm and on Personal Web Server, it is set to use Default.htm. After publishing to the Personal Web Server, the file is still called Index.htm.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this problem, use one of the following workarounds:

If your operating system is Windows 95/98, use Personal Web Server version 1.0 to rename the default document. Personal Web Server 1.0 can be found on the FrontPage compact disc in d:\PWS\Enu\Pwssetup.exe.

Note: You must first uninstall Personal Web Server version 4.0 using Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and then install Personal Web Server version 1.0 from the FrontPage compact disc.

WARNING: Do not attempt to install this program (Pwssetup.exe) on a computer running any version of Windows NT.

-OR-

Use Default.htm or Default.asp (the defaults for Personal Web Server) as the default documents on your production server (IIS or UNIX).

-OR-

Rename the file manually after publishing to Personal Web Server by doing the following:

  1. Click Start and point to Programs.
  2. Click FrontPage.
  3. Open the Web on the Personal Web Server.
  4. Right-click the default document and click Rename.
  5. Type the name of the default document on the Personal Web Server.
  6. Close FrontPage.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
