The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q210003 SYMPTOMS
After you remove shading (on the Format menu, click Borders and Shading) from a paragraph, the document background color may not show through the text.
NOTE: You must be in Web layout view (on the View menu, click Web Layout) to view a document with background color.
CAUSE
After you set shading to be a specific style and color, when you reset the shading style back to Clear, the shading color is not reset to Automatic (default).
WORKAROUND
When you want to remove paragraph shading and have the background color show through the text, do the following steps:
- Select the text that has the shading pattern applied that you want to remove.
- On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
- On the Shading tab, under Patterns, change the Color box to Automatic. Then change the Style box to Clear.
NOTE: If you do not change the Color box to Automatic before changing the Style box to Clear, the background color of your document will not show through your text. Also, after the Style box is set to Clear, the Color box is dimmed (grayed out). - Make sure the Apply to box is set to Paragraph, and then click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
