SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word on a computer that has Microsoft Bookshelf installed, Define is not listed on the shortcut menu that appears when you right-click a word in a bulleted or numbered list.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Bookshelf does not add a Define command to the shortcut menus that appear when you right-click text contained in a bulleted or numbered list.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select the word that you want.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Look Up Reference.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem and the Define command so that it will be available for a bulleted or numbered list, use the following steps:
  1. In Word, after you install Bookshelf, click Customize on the Tools menu.
  2. On the Toolbars tab, click to select the Shortcut Menus check box.

A floating Shortcut Menus toolbar appears.
  3. On the Shortcut Menus toolbar, click Text.
  4. In the Text list box, click Text.

    A shortcut menu appears.
  5. Press and hold CTRL, and then drag the Define command from the Text shortcut menu to Lists shortcut menu.
  6. Position the copied Define command where you want the Lists shortcut menu.
  7. Click Close.
The Define command is now available for text that is in a bulleted or numbered list.

MORE INFORMATION

The Define shortcut menu command and the Look Up Reference command on the Tools menu are only available if you have Microsoft Bookshelf installed on the same computer on which you have Microsoft Word installed.
