This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

When you paste link a table from Microsoft Access to Microsoft Excel versions 3.0 and earlier, only the first field name of that table appears in the spreadsheet.

CAUSE

Microsoft Excel versions 3.0 and earlier need to be given the exact dimensions of the spreadsheet area that you are pasting to before you click the Paste Link command.

RESOLUTION

To paste link a table to Excel versions 3.0 and earlier, first select the entire area on your spreadsheet. Another option is to use the Paste command, rather than the Paste Link command.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

NOTE: The following steps result in an unsuccessful paste link in Excel versions 3.0 and earlier. These same steps successfully paste link a table to later versions of Excel.
  1. Start Microsoft Access and open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  2. In the Database window, select the Customers table.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. Start Microsoft Excel and create a new worksheet.
  5. On the Excel Edit menu, click Paste Link (to paste a link in Microsoft Excel 2000, on the Edit menu, click Paste Special, and then select Paste Link. Select Text as the information type in the As box, and then click OK).
