OL2000: Programmatically-created Item Doesn't Use Custom Form (207741)

SYMPTOMS

You use the Microsoft Outlook object model to create a new item based on a custom form, but the item that is created uses a standard Outlook form.

CAUSE

Either of the following can cause this problem:
  • You used the CreateItem method to open a custom form.
  • You used the Items.Add method, but did not specify the message class of the form.

To programmatically create a new item based on a custom form, you must use the Items.Add method and specify the message class of the form to be used.

The following syntax should be used:

   Set <item> = <folder>.Items.Add("IPM.<FormClass>.<FormName>")
For example: 
   Set MyItem = MyFolder.Items.Add("IPM.Contact.MyForm")

You can assign a custom form as the default form for an Outlook folder, and if you use the Outlook user interface to create a new item, the item will use the custom form. However, if you programmatically create a new item using the Outlook object model, you must use the Items.Add method and explicitly specify the form's message class. If you do not specify a message class, Outlook will use the standard form associated with that type of folder.

The CreateItem method only creates items based on the standard Outlook forms.

The following table lists the default message class for each type of Outlook item:
