The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q205817 SYMPTOMS
DirectSound and the Diamond Monster Sound tool in Control Panel both have the ability to change the speaker configuration, but do it in different ways. This difference can cause the Multimedia tool in Control Panel and the Diamond Monster Sound tool in Control Panel to disagree as to what the current speaker configuration is.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because DirectSound and Diamond Monster Sound store the current speaker configuration in different registry keys.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, configure the speaker to use the same settings in both Control Panel tools.
