SYMPTOMS

When you give a file or folder a name that begins with an underscore ("_") character, the file disappears from view. If you attempt to recreate the file, you will be prompted with the following message:

The file _filename.htm already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?

CAUSE

In FrontPage, a file or folder name that begins with an underscore character has special meaning. The file or folder becomes "invisible" or hidden, as a means for protecting sensitive files and folders.

RESOLUTION

To view hidden folders and files in FrontPage, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Options section, click to select the "Show documents in hidden directories' check box. Click OK.
You will now be able to see all files and folders with names that begin with an underscore character.
