256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When sending subscription offers to share folders from Outlook you may get the following error message
Unable to find file newsubsc.oft.
followed by:
Unable to mail new subscription offers

CAUSE

The Office Templates folder is on a shared location. Even though the Newsubsc.oft file is installed on the local computer when folder sharing is installed, the registry points to the shared templates location on the network and not the templates folder on the local computer.

RESOLUTION

Edit the registry to change the location where Outlook looks for the file, Newsubsc.oft.

MORE INFORMATION

When Outlook sets up the Folder Sharing, it creates a file, Newsubsc.oft in the following default folder:

Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033

The registry however is pointing to a network, shared templates folder, because during setup of Microsoft Office 2000 the users chose to keep shared items on the server. This is an option that can be controlled by the network system administrator while setting up the network installation of Office.
