WD2000: Solutions or Macros That Reference, Create, or Modify Custom Dictionaries No Longer Work (204535)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q204535

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Microsoft Word 2000, existing solutions or macros that reference, create, or modify custom dictionaries may no longer work.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because in Microsoft Office 2000, the custom dictionaries are now located in the Application Data\Microsoft\Proof folder. Existing solutions or macros that reference, create, or modify custom dictionaries generally assume that the custom dictionaries are in the Proofing Tools folder. If Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and WordBasic commands still point to the old location, existing macros do not work.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, modify your existing solutions or macros so that they point to the new, correct location of the custom dictionaries.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, Word creates the proof folder in one of the following default locations, (depending on your operating system):
  • In Microsoft Windows 2000:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

  • In Microsoft Windows NT:

    C:\WINNT\Profiles\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

  • In Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows 95:

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

    -or-

    C:\Windows\Profiles\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof
