Text-wrapping break causes indent in Document Map preview in Word 2000 (204492)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q204492

SYMPTOMS

When you view your document using the Document Map (on the View menu), you notice that one of your headings is indented.

For example, in the Document Map, your headings may appear as follows:
Heading 1
 Heading 2
Heading 3

This may occur if all of the following are true:
  • Your document contains a picture object formatted to wrap text.

    -and-
  • Your document contains multiple headings.

    -and-
  • One of the headings is preceded by a text wrapping break.
For example, your document may appear as follows:
  _/\_//\\_/\_ Heading 1 <paragraph mark>
 |**Picture***| <text wrapping break>
 |***Object***|
  \_/\_/\_/\_/
Heading 2 <paragraph mark>
Heading 3 <paragraph mark>

NOTE: To display the nonprinting characters such as paragraph marks and text wrapping breaks in the document, click the Show/Hide button on the Standard toolbar.

In this example, the text wrapping break ends "Heading 1" and forces "Heading 2" to continue below the picture object, (table, or other item). "Heading 3" continues on the next blank line that does not contain a picture or table aligned with the left or right margin.

CAUSE

If a text wrapping break precedes a heading, the heading is indented one character in the Document Map. The text wrapping break (like a forced line break) appears as a space in the Document Map.
