WD2000: Bullet Style Change Does Not Change All Bullets at Level One in Hierarchy (204214)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q204214

SYMPTOMS

When you use bullets in a document and then change the style of a bullet at the level one in the bullet-style hierarchy, the other bullets at this level are not automatically updated with the style change.

When you change the style of a bullet at a lower level in the hierarchy, the style of all of the bullets is changed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Double-click the first word in the first line of the first level-one bullet.
  2. Press and hold SHIFT.
  3. Click the first word in the first line of each remaining level-one bullet.

NOTE: Even though level-two and level-three content is being selected, this does not affect the bullet style of this content.
  4. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  5. On the Bulleted tab, select the style that you want, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The hierarchy level of a bullet in a bulleted list refers to the indentation of the item. In the following example, "Level one" indicates a bullet at level one in the hierarchy, "Level two" indicates a bullet at level two in the hierarchy, and "Level three" indicates a bullet at level three in the hierarchy.
  • Level one
    • Level two
      • Level three
  • Level one
    • Level two
      • Level three
To change the bullet style for all the bullets at the level two (or greater), follow these steps:
  1. Place the insertion point to the left of the first word in the first line of the first level-two (or greater) bullet.

NOTE: Do not select (highlight) any text.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. On the Bulleted tab, select the style that you want, and then click OK. All of the bullets at the same hierarchy level are now changed.
To change the bullet style for any individual bullet at any hierarchy level, follow these steps:
  1. Select the first word in the bulleted line that you want to change.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. On the Bulleted tab, select the style that you want, and then click OK. Only the bullet on that line is changed; the remaining bullets at the same hierarchy level do not change.
