WD2000: AutoCorrect Exceptions Do Not Work As Expected (203848)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q203848 SYMPTOMS
When you add a word to the Other Corrections exceptions list (on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect, and then click Exceptions), and the word that you add is found in your Replace text as you type list of AutoCorrections, when you type the word in a document, it is still corrected.
For example,
- You add the word abbout to the Other Corrections exceptions list.
- When you type the word abbout in a document, it changes to about.
NOTE: The AutoCorrect word pair "abbout/about" exists in the list of AutoCorrections by default.
CAUSE
This behavior is by design. Entries in Other Corrections only apply to words that are corrected by the automatic spelling check feature of Word (on the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect to view the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box).
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods appropriate for your situation.
Method 1: Undo the AutoCorrect
Immediately after Word corrects the word, undo the correction. To do this, do one of the following:
- On the Standard toolbar, click Undo AutoCorrect.
-or- - On the Edit menu, click Undo AutoCorrect.
-or- - Press CTRL+Z.
Method 2: Turn Off the "Automatically Use Suggestions from the Spelling Checker" Option- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
- Click to clear the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box.
NOTES:
- For this method to work, the word must not exist in the Other Corrections list. To remove a word from the Other Corrections list, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, click Exceptions.
- On the Other Corrections tab, click to select the word in the Don't correct list, and then click Delete.
- If the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker option is unavailable (dimmed), follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Spelling & Grammar tab, click to select the Check spelling as you type check box, and then click OK.
Method 3: Remove the AutoCorrect Entry
To prevent Word from ever making the autocorrection for a specific word, delete the word from the AutoCorrect list. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, type the word that you want to remove in the Replace box. The word that you want to remove should now appear in the AutoCorrect list.
- In the list of AutoCorrect entries, click to select the word that you want to remove from the list.
- Click Delete to remove the word from the AutoCorrect list.
- Click Close to close the AutoCorrect dialog box.
