16-Bit Applications on NetWare Fail if the Path Has More Than 36 Characters (203331)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
This article was previously published under Q203331 SYMPTOMS
When using CSNW or the IntraNetWare client with Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, and accessing 16-bit applications on a NetWare Server computer in bindery mode, the application fails to start if the path to the executable from the drive mapping is longer than 36 characters.
Example:
\\Server\apps\utility\pc\apps\e-mail\exch5.0\winnt\setup.exe (program fails to start)
\\Server\exch5.0\winnt\setup.exe (program starts)
With CSNW, the user error message is:
Path not found
With the IntraNetWare client the error message is:
Invalid path
WORKAROUND
Currently, the only workaround is to map the network drive at a point where the path to the 16-bit executable is shorter than 36 characters.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT Workstation 4.0. MORE INFORMATION
This issue has been reproduced on NetWare 4.1 Server computers using bindery mode connections.
