How to Rebuild User Preferences and Options Settings in Word
To rebuild the Word Data and Options registry keys, follow these steps: WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. - Quit all programs that are running on the computer.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and click the following registry keys:
- User Preferences:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data NOTE: The Registry Editor status bar displays the following line:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
\9.0\Word\Data - User Options:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options NOTE: The Registry Editor status bar displays the following line:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options
- Export and then delete the registry keys that you located in step 4. To do this, follow these steps for each registry key that you located in step 4:
- On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
- Specify a name and location where you want to save the exported registry file, and then click Save.
- On the Edit menu, click Delete.
- Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.
- Click Exit on the Registry menu to quit Registry Editor.
NOTE: Repeat steps 4 and 5 to export and delete both registry keys, if you need to.
When you restart Word, new settings are stored in the Data and Options
registry keys.
