Long File Names Lost After Copying or Moving Files (198178)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q198178 SYMPTOMS
When you copy or move a file with a long file name, the long file name may
be converted to an MS-DOS-compatible (short) file name in 8.3 format. For
example, a file named "My Resume.doc" may be displayed as Myresu~1.doc
after you copy or move it.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are using Windows File Manager
(Winfile.exe) to copy or move files. Windows File Manager is a 16-bit
program included with Windows 95/98/Me for backwards compatibility with
earlier Windows-based programs and does not support long file names.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use Windows Explorer to copy or move files with
long file names.
For information about copying or moving files using Windows Explorer in
Windows Me, click Start, click Help, type "copying"
(without quotation marks)in the Search box, and then click Go.
For information about copying or moving files using Windows Explorer in
Windows 98, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "copying"
(without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Copying Files,
Folders" topic.
For information about copying or moving files using Windows Explorer in
Windows 95, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "copying"
or "moving" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Files Or
Folders" topic.
