Outlook may continue to run under the following circumstances:

  • You have an Outlook item open, such as an e-mail message that is minimized.
  • A Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or a Visual Basic (VB) program is making calls to the Outlook Object Model.
  • You are running an Office program that is attempting to write to the Outlook Journal. For additional information about this issue, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • You use the Outlook Personal Folders Backup utility.
To determine if this utility is causing Outlook to continue running, perform the following steps to disable it, and test.
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
  2. Click the Advanced Options button, and then click COM Add-Ins.
  3. Click to uncheck Outlook Backup Add-in.
  4. Click OK until the Options dialog boxes are all closed, then exit Outlook, and restart your computer.
  5. Start Outlook, send a message to yourself, and then exit Outlook.
  6. Wait 30 seconds to allow the MAPI Spooler to finish its operation, and check in the Close Program list to see if Outlook is still running.

How to Uninstall the Outlook Personal Folder Backup Utility

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup, and then click Add/Remove.
After you quit Outlook, you can use the following steps to determine if Outlook is still running.

Windows 95/98



  1. Press CTL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows Close Program dialog box.
  2. Check the list of programs for any reference to Outlook, such as "Inbox - Microsoft Outlook."

Windows NT

  1. Press CTL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows NT Security dialog box.
  2. In Windows NT Security, click Task Manager.
  3. Click the Processes tab.
  4. Check the list of processes for any reference to OUTLOOK.EXE.
