DHCP Service Does Not Update When Upgrading SBS to Full Windows NT (196266)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
This article was previously published under Q196266 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade the Windows NT Server portion of BackOffice Small Business
Server to a retail Windows NT Server, the DHCP server files are not updated
to allow for the upgraded server to run DHCP with an existing DHCP server
on the same network.
CAUSE
By default, BackOffice Small Business Server disables its own DHCP server
service upon startup if it detects another DHCP server on the network. This
is by design to prevent the SBS server from becoming a rogue DHCP server
when installed on an existing IP network.
When upgrading the Small Business Server to Windows NT Server 4.0, the DHCP
service does not remove the rogue DHCP server functionality. This prevents
an upgraded Small Business Server from being used with an existing DHCP
server.
RESOLUTION
If redundant DHCP servers are required, configure two separate DHCP servers
to service the local clients requests and remove the DHCP service from the
Small Business Server.
