SYMPTOMS

When you type a person's name in a Works for Windows database field or spreadsheet cell, the name may be changed automatically to the name of a month or the abbreviation for a month. You may experience this behavior with the following names:

  • Marc
  • April
  • May
  • June

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Works attempts to increase the speed and ease of use when you enter text in these modules. When you type any of these names, Works assumes you want to enter the name of a month rather than an individual's name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, type a QUOTATION MARK (") in front of the name. For example, if you want to type the name "Jan," type the following line:

"Jan

To prevent this issue from occuring, format the field or cell as text. To do this, use the appropriate method for the Works module you are using.

Database

  1. Open the Works database you want to use.
  2. Click the field in which you want to type the name.
  3. On the Format menu, click Field.

NOTE: If you are using Works 3.0, click Number on the Format menu.
  4. Under Format, click Text, and then click OK.

Spreadsheet

  1. Open the Works spreadsheet you want to use.
  2. Click the cell or column in which you want to type the name.
  3. On the Format menu, click Number.
  4. Under Format, click Text, and then click OK.
