BUG: Infrared Device Stops Functioning During Data Transfer (195554)

SYMPTOMS

There is a known hardware problem with some older infrared controllers [National Semiconductor Fast Infrared Controllers] that causes them to stop functioning while transmitting or receiving at speeds greater than 115 kilobytes per second (Kbps). This problem is most common at 1 megabits per second (Mbps), although it does occur infrequently at 4 Mbps. This problem should not cause Windows to become unstable, although 1 and 4 Mbps infrared transfer speeds might not be available until the computer is restarted. Speeds of 115 Kbps or less should function without restarting.

RESOLUTION

If you encounter this problem frequently, you should limit the infrared connection speed to 115200 Kbps using the Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a third-party (National Semiconductor) bug with the Microsoft platforms listed at the beginning of this article.
