PRJ98: Error If Renamed Fields Contain Spaces or Parentheses (193150)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q193150

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you insert a field with a customized name in a Table Definition, Bar Style, or other Microsoft Project 98 definition dialog box, you may receive one of the following error messages:
The field "<custom name> (<field name>)" does not exist. Click a field from the list in the Field Name column.

-or-

This value is not valid in this situation. Check the field to see if it requires text, a date, or a number, and that you typed the information correctly.
NOTE: To create fields with customized names, you rename built-in Microsoft Project 98 fields using the Customize Field Names dialog box. (On the Tools menu, point to Customize, and then click Fields.)

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Project 98 allows you to enter leading or trailing spaces and include parentheses as part of the field name when you customize field names. However, parentheses and leading or trailing spaces are not recognized as valid characters when you insert the customized field in certain Microsoft Project 98 definition dialog boxes, including the following:

  • Table Definition
  • Filter Definition
  • Bar Styles (Gantt Chart or Calendar)
  • Format Bar
  • Define Import/Export Map

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, edit the customized field names to remove parentheses and leading or trailing spaces.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
