PRJ98: Gantt Bar Missing And Wrong Duration When Assign Resource (190579)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you assign a resource with zero units to a task, the task duration may not change to zero and you may not see a milestone symbol or bar on a Gantt Chart.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when all the following conditions occur:

The task has a duration greater than zero.
The resource is the first assigned to the task.
The resource is assigned to the task with units of zero in the Assign Resources dialog box or the Task Form view.

NOTE: The task's Start and Finish dates are properly set, but the task duration is not changed to zero.

WORKAROUND

To Correct This Problem

Change the duration of the task to zero by following these steps:

In a Task table click to select the task.
On the Project menu, click Task Information, click the General tab.
In the Duration field, type the duration of 0d. Click OK.

To Avoid This Problem

Enter the resource assignment in the Task Information dialog box by following these steps:

In a Task table, click to select the task.
On the Project menu, click Task Information, click the Resources tab.
Under the Resource Name column enter or select the desired resource name.
Under the Units column type 0d. Click OK.

RESOLUTION

To prevent these symptoms from occurring, install Microsoft Project 98 for Windows Service Release 1 (SR-1).

NOTE: Microsoft Project 98 SR-1 will not correct this problem in existing files. Follow the steps listed in the Workaround under the heading "To correct this problem"

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, ServiceRelease 1 (SR-1).
