SYMPTOMS

In the "How Am I Doing On My Budget" report, the Total column shows incorrect values. Consequently the Difference column values are also incorrect. The amounts shown are off by a few pennies.

For example, for a particular subcategory the budgeted total should be $500.00, but instead the budgeted total reads $500.04.

CAUSE

The cause is a rounding error. Money divides the budgeted amount by twelve to get the monthly figures which are then rounded to the nearest penny. The Total amount is calculated as twelve times the (rounded) monthly amounts.

For example, if you have a budget set up for "Total, over the course of the year" of 500.00, the report divides this by 12 to get the monthly amount of 41.666, which it rounds to 41.67; then when the report adds up these 12 monthly amounts to get the total for the year, it arrives at 500.04.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the products listed at the beginning of this article.
