SUMMARY

By default, Word for the Macintosh creates a new, blank document when you start the program. If you do not want a new, blank document, you can change your Word startup options.

You can change startup options for Word for the Macintosh by running the ToolsAdvancedSettings command and modifying the WordSwitches options. The options you choose are stored in the Word Settings (6) file and are used each time you start Word.

To Modify the Startup Options

  1. On the Tools menu, click Macro.
  2. In the macro name box, type ToolsAdvancedSettings.

    A description should appear at the bottom of the dialog box that says, "Changes advanced options in the settings file."
  3. Click Run.
  4. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, type WordSwitches in the Option box.
  5. In the Setting box, type /n, and then click Set.
  6. Click OK.
Word saves the settings to the settings file.

NOTE: the /n switch may not function correctly when add-ins are loaded. For example, if you install Internet Assistant version 2.0 for Word version 6.0.1 or 6.0.1a, Word opens document1 even when you use the /n switch. If you remove the add-ins from the Word Startup folder before you start Word with the /n switch, Word does not open a new document.

Starting Word for the Macintosh with No Document

  1. On the Tools menu, click Macro, and click List Commands.
  2. From the Macros Available In list, select Word Commands.
  3. Select the ToolsAdvancedSettings macro, and click Run.
  4. Select the Microsoft Word category.
  5. In the Option box, type WordSwitches.
  6. In the Setting box, type "/n" (for no documents open when word starts).
