PPT: Pack and Go Saves Files in 8.3 File Name Format (189695)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
- Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
- Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q189695 SUMMARY
The Pack And Go Wizard packs a presentation by using the MS-DOS 8.3 format.
Presentations that have long file names may be packed; however, when
you unpack them, the file names are converted to the 8.3 format. For
example, if you pack a presentation called My Presentation.ppt, the file
name is converted to Mypres~1.ppt when you unpack it. The name change
does not affect the operation of Pack And Go, PowerPoint, or PowerPoint
Viewer.
MORE INFORMATION
You can use the Pack And Go Wizard to compress large or multiple
presentations on a disk or network location. The compressed file
can span disks if the file is too large for a single disk.
You can use the Pack And Go Wizard to pack presentations to be played
on computers that run Microsoft Windows 3.1. Because Windows 3.1 and some types of network servers do not support long file names, the Wizard always
shortens the file name to the 8.3 format.
