Fax Server Properties Cannot Be Changed While Port Is in Use (189574)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to make changes to the Fax Server properties on a Small Business Server computer, changes cannot be saved. Attempting to save changes by clicking OK or Apply will generate the following error:
Couldn't save fax device configuration information.

CAUSE

The Fax port is in use. This problem will occur if a client is attempting to send a fax, which has the fax printer driver in use and thus disallows saving changes to the properties.

RESOLUTION

Ensure that the fax printer is not in use by a client workstation before attempting to make changes to the Fax Server properties.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Edition. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
