The following tables include limits and, in some cases, recommendations, that have been tested on a wider variety of configurations. If you are having a problem with a limitation, try using the recommended size.

NOTE: Maximum File Size

The maximum file size of 32 MB does not include graphics; therefore, if the file contains graphics, the maximum file size can be larger than 32 MB. This maximum file size is different from earlier versions of Word.

To minimize the size of your Word document file when inserting graphics, use the Link To File option and click to clear the Save With Document check box. When the Save With Document check box is selected, Word saves a picture (PICT) preview of the graphic in your Word document; this PICT allows Word to display the graphic quickly, but it also increases the overall size of your document.

The Link To File and Save With Document check boxes are located on the Insert Picture dialog box. To access the Insert Picture dialog box, point to Picture on the Insert menu, and then click From File.
