Trailing Gaps After Individually Formatted Characters (189481)

SYMPTOMS

You may see trailing gaps (spacing), which you did not type, between text characters you typed in a cell.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you apply the Italic font style to one or more characters in a cell in which the characters are formatted with varying font sizes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The gap is not a character and cannot be deleted. The gap appears at the end of a text fragment that has a different font size than the text fragment next to it. To illustrate this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Excel.
  2. Type the following into a new worksheet:

    A1: aaaaaaaaa

  3. Select the first three characters in the formula bar and change the font size to 12 by selecting 12 from the Font Size list box on the Formatting toolbar.
  4. Select the three center characters in the formula bar and change the font size to 18. Then select the last three characters and change the font size to 24.
  5. Select the entire text string and click the Italic button on the Formatting toolbar. Press ENTER.
Note that gaps appears between the italic characters of differing font sizes.
