PRB: Error: 'Directory Path Would Be Too long' Creating Web (189405)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Visual InterDev 1.0
This article was previously published under Q189405 SYMPTOMS
When trying to create a new Web project in Visual InterDev 1.0, you may
receive the following error message:
Can't create project <your project name> because the directory path
would be too long. Please try a shorter project name.
This error message can appear even when the path is of normal length.
CAUSE
This error occurs when the Visual InterDev 1.0 client tries to contact the
Web server via the FrontPage Server Extensions. A corrupted or damaged
installation of the FrontPage Extensions incorrectly reports that they
cannot create the desired path.
RESOLUTION
On the Web server start up the FrontPage administration tool, which is
installed by default into C:\ProgramFiles\ Microsoft FrontPage\Bin\
Fpsrvwin.exe. The Select Port Number text box should show both port 443 and
80 as being used. (443 is for Secure Sockets Layer.) Click the Uninstall
button to remove the server extensions from the selected port. When this is
finished, click the Install button.
NOTE: In some cases it may be necessary to use the Add\Remove applet on the
Control Panel to remove the FrontPage Server Extensions from the machine,
and reinstall from the CD.
