Unable to Rename a File on a NetWare Server (189298)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q189298 SYMPTOMS
When you try to rename a file on a Novell NetWare server, you may be
unable to do so.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the new file name and the old file name have the
same MS-DOS 8.3 file name. For example, the "File 123.txt" file has an
MS-DOS 8.3 file name of "File123.txt". When you try to rename the
"File 123.txt" file to "File123.txt" by removing the space in the file
name, you are trying to choose a name that is a duplicate of the existing
MS-DOS 8.3 file name.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, rename the file to a name that is completely
different then the current file name, and then rename the file to the name
you want.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
