PRB: Errors Occur When Preinstalling Windows 95 Using OPK (189147)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK) 95 OSR2
- Microsoft OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK) 95 OSR2.5
This article was previously published under Q189147 SYMPTOMS
When preinstalling Windows 95 OSR 2.x, one of the following error messages
might appear after you have copied the files from the PBF onto the hard
drive of the target computer:
Invalid number of parameters
Invalid Path or Filename
The following file is missing or corrupted <Errorfilename>
After these messages, the following error message appears:
An error has occurred while transferring the files to the target
machine. Preload integrity is compromised, unable to continue.
Press CTRL + C.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the SOURCE environment variable is not correctly
specified in the FactOnly.bat file on the PBF or if the real-mode CD-ROM
drivers are missing or corrupt.
One of the following might have caused the first error message:
- The REM statement at the beginning of the MSCDEX line file has not been
removed.
- The REM statement at the beginning of the "SET SOURCE=" has not been
removed.
- The drive letter specified in the "SET SOURCE=" line is different than
the drive letter specified in the MSCDEX line.
One of the following might have caused the second error message:
- There are trailing blank spaces after the source drive letter in the
"SET SOURCE=" line.
- A ":" is missing after the source drive letter in the "SET SOURCE="
line.
The third message appears when Mscdex.exe or the real-mode CD-ROM driver
are not copied manually to the \FactOnly directory of the PBF.
RESOLUTION
You can correct the first error by ensuring that the Mscdex line and the
"SET SOURCE=" line do not have REM statements at the beginning, and the
SOURCE drive letter specified in both the lines are the same.
You can correct the second error by hitting the ENTER key immediately after
specifying the drive letter in the "SET SOURCE=" line, and making sure that
there is a ":" after the SOURCE drive letter in the "SET SOURCE=" line.
You can correct the third error by manually copying the Mscdex.exe and the
real-mode CD-ROM driver files to the \Factonly directory of the PBF before
booting the target computer for the first time.
