SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start any of the games listed at the top of this article, the screen may turn black and the computer may stop responding (hang). In addition, if you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to quit the program, the Close Program dialog box does not open and you must restart your computer.

When you start Age of Empires II: Age of Kings, you may see the following message:
empires2 executed an invalid instruction in module empires2.icd

CAUSE

The behavior can occur if you run CyberMedia's Guard Dog software.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit Guard Dog before you attempt to start the game. To quit Guard Dog:
  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. In the list of running programs, click Guard Dog, and then click End Task.
  3. When you are prompted to quit Guard Dog, click Yes.
NOTE: Guard Dog starts again the next time you restart the computer.
