This article was previously published under Q188690 SYMPTOMS
When you try to start your Windows 98-based IBM ThinkPad 770 laptop
computer, your computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Csmapper.sys file is being loaded from the
Config.sys file. The Csmapper.sys file prevents the use of linear-flash
and synchronous random-access memory (SRAM) Personal Computer Memory Card
International Association (PCMCIA) cards that use MS-DOS real-mode
drivers. Because your computer is unable to access this type of memory,
you may experience this behavior.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove the real-mode drivers, and then install
protect-mode drivers. To do so, use the following steps:
- Restart your computer and press and hold the CTRL key. From the Startup
Menu, choose Command Prompt Only.
- Type edit config.sys, and then press ENTER.
- Type rem at the beginning of the lines
that reference the Csmapper.sys and Carddrv.exe files.
- Press ALT+F, press S, press ALT+X, and then press ENTER.
- Restart your computer.
- Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
- Click your CD-ROM drive in the Look In box, and then click Find Now.
- Right-click the Trueffs.inf file, and then click Install.
