OFF98: Office Assistant Help Runs Search When RETURN Is Pressed (184797)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q184797

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Office Assistant, pressing RETURN may cause the search to be run regardless of the button the mouse pointer is currently over.

CAUSE

The Search button is the default button in the Office Assistant. Unless you click or activate another button, the Search button is active.

WORKAROUND

To choose Tips, Options, or Close in the Office Assistant, click the option button for that selection.

To select Tips or Options by using the keyboard, press COMMAND+<Letter>, where <Letter> is the first letter of the button text. To close the Office Assistant balloon with the keyboard, press ESC.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The added functionality of "mouseover" (to hover or rest the mouse pointer) displays animation based on where the mouse is located on the screen. In the Office Assistant, this animation appears to make a button active when the mouse pointer is placed over it. However, unless you click the button or use the keyboard command, the button is not active.
