FIX: GPF When Invalid Style Sheet Given for Accessibility (184777)

SYMPTOMS

A General Protection Fault (GPF) occurs when an invalid style sheet is specified in the accessibility options of Internet Explorer 4.0. If Active Desktop is installed, the GPF occurs during login, preventing the user from logging in.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This bug has been corrected in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01.

Internet Explorer 4.0 allows a user to specify a style sheet that will be used to format all Web documents. This default style sheet is set by following these steps:
  1. From the Internet Explorer View menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Click the Accessibility button.
  4. Select the "Format documents using my style sheet" check box.
  5. Click the Browse button and select a file to be used as the default style sheet.
If the file you have chosen is an invalid style sheet file or contains invalid style sheet data, Internet Explorer 4 will cause a GPF the first time you refresh or navigate to a new Web page.

If Active Desktop is installed, this GPF will occur each time the you reboot your system and attempt to login. To stop this GPF from occurring in Windows 95, you must start up in Safe Mode. In Windows NT, there is currently no workaround for this problem. Internet Explorer 4.01 corrects this issue.
