The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0a
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.0
This article was previously published under Q184751 SYMPTOMS
Your cursor may change to an hourglass and even disappear when you try to
run the Small Business Server (SBS) Administrative Console. Wizards may not
function correctly and may cause multiple Java Script errors to occur. In
some cases, the Manage Server option my not even be present from the Start
menu.
CAUSE
Multiple problems with the Administrative Console, Java Script errors, and
general functionality of the applications can occur if the proper
check boxes are not selected after you cancel and restart the application
setup portion of Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server. When you
install SBS, these boxes are automatically selected but will be cleared if
setup is run again after you cancel.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, select the following check boxes after you cancel
setup and restart the installation (application portion) of SBS setup:
- Crystal Reports
- Internet Connection Wizard
- Microsoft Active Server Pages
- Microsoft Index Server
- Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Microsoft Proxy Client
- Microsoft Proxy Server
- Small Business Server
Other components can be selected as desired.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT Small Business
Server versions 4.0 and 4.0a. We are researching this problem and will post
new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes
available.
MORE INFORMATION
When the Small Business Server portion of setup begins, the applications
required for proper functionality of the Console are automatically checked
and cannot be cleared. However, if setup is cancelled and the server is
restarted, these required applications will not be selected. Actually, no
applications will be selected and this requires that each one has to be
selected manually. If the proper, required applications are not selected
when setup is restarted, the Administrative Console will not function. The
required applications for proper Administrative Console functionality are
listed below and these must be manually selected after canceling and
restarting the installation regardless of what is desired.
WARNING: If applications were previously installed before re-running setup,
these applications must be selected again or they will be removed from the
system.
One scenario where this may occur is when administrators want to add
additional network cards and drivers after the Windows NT portion of setup
is finished (and restart) before installing the applications.
