XL98: Cannot use File DSN to Connect to SQL Server via AppleTalk (184684)

When you configure a SQL Server data source, you may receive the following
error message:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
MS SQL Server Error:-1
[Visigenic][ODBC MS SQL Server 6 Driver]Unable to connect to data
source
Your only option is to click OK. After you click OK, you must click cancel
in the Data Source dialog box.
NOTE: This problem may occur if you are using either the ODBC Data Source
Administrator or the Create New Data Source dialog box to configure your
data source.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if all of the following conditions are true:
- You are creating a File Data Source Name (DSN).
-and-
- You are using the Visgenic MS SQL Server 1.1 ODBC driver that is
included with Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
-and-
- You specify AppleTalk for Network Library in the Data Source dialog box.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, create a User DSN instead of a File DSN.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
