Why can I Install Microsoft Office 98 into a Printer on My Desktop?

The Macintosh operating system treats printers on the desktop like folders that are viewed in a dialog box. As a result, the Microsoft Office 98 Installer program allows you to select a printer and install Office into the printer as if it were a folder.

Does Microsoft Support This Kind of Installation?

At the time of this writing (April 1998), Microsoft has not identified any problems that occur if you install Microsoft Office 98 into a printer on the desktop.

Even though this is the case, Microsoft does not support installation of Microsoft Office 98 into a printer on the desktop.

If you have installed Microsoft Office 98 into a printer on the desktop, relocate your installation of Microsoft Office 98. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Double-click the printer that contains the Microsoft Office 98 folder.
  3. Drag the Microsoft Office 98 folder from the printer window to the desktop.
  4. Close the printer window.
  5. Drag the Microsoft Office 98 folder from the desktop onto the icon for the hard disk.
  6. Open the Microsoft Office 98 folder on the hard disk.
  7. Start any of the programs included in Microsoft Office 98 (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft PowerPoint).
The "Configuring Office Components" screen appears, and your programs are automatically registered for the new location.
