This article was previously published under Q184240

SYMPTOMS

The Help file for Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition incorrectly states that the Voice Annotation component is located on the CD-ROM.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can install the Voice Annotation components for Microsoft Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, if available. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word.
  2. Move the PPC Registration Database file to the Trash. The PPC Registration Database file is located in the following folder:

    Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences

  3. Run Microsoft Setup from your Microsoft Word 6.0 for the Macintosh disk.
  4. When you are prompted "Please select a destination folder for your new software," select the Microsoft Office 98 folder.
  5. Click Setup to continue the Setup program.
  6. Click Complete/Custom.
  7. In the Options list, clear all of the option check boxes except the Accessories check box.

NOTE: When you clear the Microsoft Word option check box, the following warning message will be shown:
This component is a vital part of Microsoft Word 6.0x. If it is not installed, Word will not run correctly.
Click OK to close this warning message.
  8. Click the right arrow to expand the Accessories option.
  9. Click to clear all of the Accessories check boxes except Voice Annotation, and then click Continue to complete Setup.
After Setup has completed, run Word 98 Macintosh Edition. You will now be able to add Voice Comments (Annotations) to your Word document. To do this, click Comment on the Insert menu, and then click Insert Sound Object in the Comments pane.

STATUS

The Voice Annotations component was not complete when Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition shipped. Microsoft decided not to include the component on the CD-ROM to avoid delaying the release of Word. The Voice Annotation component may be released at a later date.

MORE INFORMATION

The ability to add Voice Annotations to a document was not included with Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

The following incorrect information can be found in MS Word Help:

NOTE: If your computer has a microphone, you can record voice comments. Before you can insert a voice comment, you must install the Voice Annotation component which is located in the Value Pack folder on the CD-ROM or on the network you installed Microsoft Word from.

To find this information in Help, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Word Help, type the following text

voice annotations

and then click Show Topics. Select the "Insert a comment" topic, and click Go To. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask the Office Assistant.
