Error Message: You Must Run CVT32 to Convert a Drive to FAT32 (184214)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to convert a drive to the file allocation table 32 (Fat32) file system from a command prompt, you may receive the following error message:
You must run CVT32 to convert a drive to FAT32.

In Windows, click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click the FAT32 Converter Icon.

The conversion was canceled.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you attempt to run the conversion file Cvt.exe from a command prompt without using the /cvt32 parameter.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add the /cvt32 parameter to the Cvt.exe command and then run the conversion. For example, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER

cvt <drive>: /cvt32

where <drive> is the drive you want to convert.

STATUS

This feature is by design.

The /cvt32 parameter is designed to keep you from accidentally running the converter. Note that without this parameter, the utility does not run.

The /win parameter can be used to run the converter in an MS-DOS window (also known as a virtual machine, or VM) in Windows98. Note that this only works if the specified volume has no open files. If the converter cannot prevent all possible file accesses by other system components and programs during the conversion, the conversion is cancelled.
