The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q183999 For a Microsoft Excel 2002 version of this article, see 289255.
For a Microsoft Excel 2000 version of this article, see 212062.
SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Excel, manual page breaks in a worksheet automatically shift
position when you insert or delete rows or columns. However, when you open
a file that was saved in the "Microsoft Excel Workbook 5.0/95 (*.xls)" file
format in Microsoft Excel 97, Microsoft Excel does not automatically shift
manual horizontal page breaks when you delete or insert rows.
NOTE: This behavior persists if the workbook is subsequently saved as a
Microsoft Excel 97 workbook.
CAUSE
The problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You select a cell that is not in the first row and click Page Break on
the Insert menu to insert a manual horizontal page break in a workbook.
-and-
- You save the workbook from Microsoft Excel version 5.0 or 7.0 or
you save the file from Microsoft Excel 97 in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95
Workbook file format.
-and-
- You open the workbook in Microsoft Excel 97.
-and-
- You insert or delete one or more rows above the manual horizontal page
break in the workbook.
RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, remove and reinsert manual page breaks in the
affected document. To do this, follow these steps:
- Select the cell location of the manual page break.
NOTE: If you do not see the manual page breaks, click Page Setup on the
File menu and click OK.
- On the Insert menu, click Remove Page Break.
- With the same cell location of the manual page break selected, click
Page Break on the Insert menu.
- Repeat steps 1 through 3 for every manual page break on the workbook.
The new manual page break moves as the rows are inserted or deleted above
it.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
A manual page break in an Excel 5.0/95 workbook remains on the same row
when rows are inserted or deleted in Microsoft Excel 97. Columns shift as
in earlier versions of Excel when you insert or delete columns.
