Outlook 98 Setup is divided into six stages. These stages are:
- Download
- Expand and start the Setup Wizard
- MSDetect: Gather information about host computer.
- Download CAB Files: Needed files only, as based upon msdetect.
- ACME Setup: Decompress and register files.
- End of Setup and First Run begins.
It is during the last stage, "First Run," where the silent conversion of
the previous mail clients takes place. The conversions that take place are
determined by registry entries created during the Setup Wizard phase.
Registry Entries
Prior to completion of the Wizard, two important registry entries are made,
PrimaryClient and MailSupport. First Run uses these entries to determine
its configuration logic.
The PrimaryClient registry key is:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Setup\PrimaryClient

1 - Netscape Mail
2 - Netscape Messenger
3 - Eudora Lite

There is one additional registry key written at the completion of the
Setup Wizard that determines whether or not you are setting up in PIM only
mode. The PIMOnly registry key is:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Setup\PIMOnly

For users of competitive Internet e-mail programs, Outlook 98 imports e-
mail silently. Outlook 98 does not have to import anything for Internet
Mail Enhancement Patch (IMEP) users, because the existing profile is
manipulated in place and the original message store is kept.
Import Internet Mail and Address Books
After MAPI logon, Outlook 98 checks for the following Import Mail Registry
key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Setup\ImportMail
If it is present and set to True, a dialog box is displayed, asking if you
want to import Internet mail and addresses from the primary client.
Although Outlook 98 supports the import of information from several
competitive PIM applications, it does not support the automatic import of
e-mail, rules, address books, and distribution lists from competitive
e-mail applications. The Import Internet Mail and Address Books feature
lets you import e-mail messages, e-mail addresses, distribution lists, and
rules from competitive Internet mail clients.
