XFOR: MCIS: Pop3svc Will Not Start from Command Line (182931)

SYMPTOMS

This article applies to Microsoft Internet Mail Service. The POP3 Server service does not start from the command line if there are a large number of remote directories configured. The following error occurs after you attempt to start the service from the command line:
C:\users\default>net start pop3svc

The Microsoft POP3 Server Service could not be started
Other services such as the SMTP and NNTP service may experience the same problem if they take a long time to initialize.

WORKAROUND

Start the POP3 Server service using Internet Services Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft CommercialInternet System, version 1.0 Service Pack 2. A supported fix is now available, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
