PPT98: Cannot Play CD Audio Tracks if CD-ROM Isn't on SCSI Bus 0 (182923)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q182923

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a CD audio track into your presentation, PowerPoint does not recognize the audio CD in the CD-ROM drive.

The AppleCD Audio Player does recognize and play the audio CD without any problems.

CAUSE

PowerPoint can only use a CD-ROM device that is on SCSI bus 0 to play CD audio tracks. The CD-ROM drive attached to your system may have the CD-ROM device attached to SCSI bus 1.

The AppleCD Audio Player is able to recognize the disc across SCSI bus 0 and 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

SCSI bus 0 is usually reserved for an internal bus device. SCSI bus 1 is usually reserved for an external device added to the system. If you are running the Macintosh Operating System Software version 8 or 8.1, you can use the Apple System Profiler to determine which SCSI bus your CD-ROM drive is on. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Apple menu, click Apple System Profiler.
  2. On the Select menu, click Device Information.
  3. From the Total Buses Found list, click SCSI Bus 0.
  4. Check to see if your CD-ROM drive is listed on that bus.
NOTE: PowerPoint can play CD audio tracks from a CD-ROM drive that is on an ATA bus.
