XFOR: Internet Mail Service Rejects Messages Sent with 7- Bit Encoding (182917)

This article applies to Microsoft Internet Mail Service. As specified in
RFC 1652, the MCIS Internet Mail Server rejects mail messages from a
foreign SMTP mail host with a 7-bit message body. In accordance with RFC 1652, a mail
message with the following encoding:
MAIL FROM:<user's email address> BODY=7BIT
is rejected by the MCIS Internet Mail Server with the following error
message:
553 Unrecognized command.
NOTE: The mail message is never sent.
WORKAROUND
Configure the foreign SMTP mail host to use 8-bit MIME instead of 7-bit
message body encoding.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft CommercialInternet System, version 1.0 Service Pack 2.
A supported fix is now available, but it has not been fully regression
tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific
problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem,
Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains
this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
