The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q182725

SYMPTOMS

When you run System File Checker using the default settings, you may not be prompted to replace older or deleted files.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have not enabled the following settings:
  • Check for changed files
  • Check for deleted files
If these settings are not enabled, System File Checker only appends the Sfclog.txt file, and does not prompt you to make changes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type sfc.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click Settings, and then click the Check For Changed Files and Check For Deleted Files check boxes to select them.
  3. Click OK, click Scan Files For Errors, and then click Start.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, System File Checker starts with those settings disabled. After you enable those settings, they remain the default settings.
