SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you save or insert a project, you may receive one of the following error messages.

Save a Project

When you save a project using the Save As dialog box, you may receive the following message:
There is not enough memory to display the Save dialog box. You can still save your project as "C:\Windows\Temp\Prj<x>.tmp", however. Do you want to continue saving the project file?
Where <x> is a number from 2 through 9, or a letter from A through Z.

If you click Yes, your file is saved as Prj<x>.tmp in the Windows\Temp directory. You can then open that file in Microsoft Project with no loss of data.

NOTE: The path "C:\Windows\Temp\Prj<x>.tmp" may differ depending on the location of the Temp directory. The first time this error occurs, the file name displayed in the message will be Prj2.tmp. Each consecutive time you try to save the file, the name's suffix will increment from 2 through 9, and then from A through Z.

Insert a Project

When you insert a project, you may receive the following message:
There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or Windows you aren't using, and then try again.
After clicking OK you also receive the following message:
An unexpected error occurred during execution. Try one of the following:
Check that all argument names and values are correct and are of the correct type. You may have run out of memory. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using.

Delete the Registry Key

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Delete the MSProject.Project.8 registry key in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder of the registry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Regedit and click OK.
  3. Double-click the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder.
  4. Scroll through the list of folders until you see MSProject.Project.8
  5. Click to select the MSProject.Project.8 folder.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  7. Click Yes to delete the key.
  8. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
NOTE: If this workaround does not resolve the issue, go to the next workaround.
