PPT98: Hyperlink to Custom Show Fails if Name Changed (182261)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q182261

SYMPTOMS

When you hyperlink to a custom show in Microsoft PowerPoint, the custom show may not play. In some cases the pointer will disappear until you move it away from the hyperlink object you clicked.

CAUSE

This behavior happens if you change the name of a custom show after you have created the hyperlink to it. For example, if you create a show called "Custom Show," created a hyperlink to Custom Show 1 and then renamed Custom Show to "MyShow," any hyperlinks you created that link to Custom Show will no longer work.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to set the hyperlink to link to your custom show:

Method 1: Change the Hyperlink to Reference the Name of the New Custom Show

  1. Click the object that has the hyperlink to the custom show.
  2. On the Slide Show menu, click Action Settings.
  3. In the Action Settings dialog box, click Hyperlink To.
  4. In the Hyperlink list, click Custom Show.
  5. In the Link To Custom Show dialog box, click the new name of your custom show, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK.

Method 2: Restore the Original Name for Your Custom Show

  1. On the Slide Show menu, click Custom Shows.
  2. Click the custom show you renamed, and then click Edit.
  3. In the Slide Show Name box type the original name of the custom show, and then click OK.
  4. Click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Custom Show feature allows you to create a presentation within a presentation. Instead of creating multiple, nearly identical presentations for different audiences, you can group together a set of slides for each audience.
